Energy Saving

Energy saving

Cut the electricity your cooling tower uses

Fans and pumps often run at full speed all day, with blades and pumps that are not efficient. We save you energy in three ways.

  • Manage the air flow
  • Fit energy saving blades
  • Use a more efficient pump

Three ways to save

How we cut your energy use

Each one cuts a different part of the electricity bill. Used together, they add up.

Manage the air flow
01

Manage the air flow

The fan is the biggest electricity user in most cooling towers, and its power rises very fast with speed. If a fan runs 20% slower, it uses nearly half the power (the power goes with the cube of the speed). A tower that runs at full speed all day, in cool weather or at partial load, is wasting that difference.

  • Match the fan speed to the real cooling load, for example with a variable speed drive (inverter)
  • Adjust the fan speed and the blade angle to the duty you need
  • Fix the tip clearance and close the gaps where air leaks around the bundle
Fit energy saving blades
02

Fit energy saving blades

Your cooling tower needs a certain amount of air to cool the water. A better blade can move that same amount of air with less power. An energy saving blade has an aerodynamic shape, so the air flows smoothly over it with little drag and few vortices, and less of the motor power is lost as turbulence. The same airflow then needs less power at the fan shaft, and the motor draws less electricity. The Cofimco TANDEM blade joins two airfoils, which keeps the air flowing smoothly over the blade and raises the fan efficiency. Cofimco reports lower power use in client measurements and official tests, and says the saving can repay the fan.

  • The same airflow with less power: the cooling stays the same, the electricity goes down
  • Smooth airflow over the blade means less drag and less wasted energy
  • Lower blade speed, which also reduces noise
  • Fits your existing fan drive, so the upgrade stays simple

Use a newer, high efficiency pump
03

Use a newer, high efficiency pump

A newer, high efficiency pump turns more of the electricity it uses into moving water, so it needs less power for the same flow and head. An older pump, or a pump that is not efficient at your duty point, wastes the difference as heat and noise. Replacing it with a new high efficiency pump, selected for your real flow and head, gives you the same cooling water flow for less electricity. Cooling water pumps run for many hours, so the saving adds up every day.

  • Newer designs with high efficiency, so they use less power for the same flow
  • Selected for your real flow and head, so the pump runs near its best efficiency point
  • Split case and vertical turbine pumps for cooling water circulation
  • Fewer kWh for every hour the pump runs
